Justice Aalia Neelum Becomes First Female Chief Justice of LHC

The Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) has unanimously nominated Justice Aalia Neelum as the new Chief Justice of the Lahore High Court (LHC). This appointment marks a significant milestone in Pakistan’s judicial history, as Justice Neelum becomes the first-ever woman to hold the prestigious position of LHC Chief Justice.

The decision was made during the JCP’s recent meeting, where both government representatives – the Attorney General for Pakistan and the Law Minister – agreed on the consideration of Justice Neelum as the next LHC Chief Justice. This consensus among the key stakeholders underscores the broad support for this groundbreaking appointment.

Justice Aalia Neelum, who is currently third in the seniority list of the LHC, will assume the role of Chief Justice upon the elevation of the incumbent, Justice Malik Shahzad Ahmad Khan, and Justice Shahid Bilal Hassan to the Supreme Court. She will serve in this position until November 11, 2028, making her the longest-serving female Chief Justice in Pakistan’s history.

Known for her expertise in criminal laws, Justice Neelum has delivered numerous reported judgments on significant legal issues during her tenure on the LHC bench since 2013. Her academic background is equally impressive, with a Master’s degree in Political Science, a B.Ed. degree, and various diplomas in fields related to law and the judiciary.

“This is a momentous occasion for the Pakistani judiciary and a testament to the growing recognition of women’s leadership in the legal profession,” said a legal expert, speaking on condition of anonymity. “Justice Neelum’s appointment will undoubtedly inspire young women aspiring to become judges and contribute to the administration of justice in the country.

“The decision to appoint Justice Neelum as the LHC Chief Justice is a departure from the convention of elevating the senior puisne judge to the top position. However, the JCP’s decision underscores its commitment to promoting merit and diversity within the judiciary, rather than adhering strictly to seniority-based appointments.

As Justice Neelum prepares to take on her new role, the legal community and the at large eagerly await her leadership and the potential impact she may have on the functioning of the Lahore High Court. This historic appointment is a significant step forward in the quest for gender equality and the representation of women in the highest echelons of Pakistan’s judicial system.
