What are the reasons behind the decision to impose Section 144?

The Punjab government has enacted Section 144, banning all public gatherings and closing educational institutions across the province for two days. This decision comes amid calls for nationwide protests by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) against proposed constitutional amendments and the imprisonment of its founder, Imran Khan.

The PTI’s protests are set to coincide with ongoing demonstrations related to an alleged rape incident involving a female college student in Lahore, which has sparked significant unrest. The Punjab Home Department’s notification cited security concerns, stating that public gatherings could become targets for potential terrorist attacks. The restrictions will be in effect from October 18 to 19.

Educational institutions, including schools, colleges, and universities, will remain closed on Friday. While the official notifications did not specify the reasons for these closures, government sources indicated they were linked to the growing unrest among students. Protests have intensified since reports surfaced about the alleged assault, although an investigation has found no evidence supporting the claims.

Violent demonstrations have already led to over 380 arrests in Rawalpindi, where students clashed with police, resulting in property damage and injuries. Many of those arrested were reportedly not students, raising questions about the motives behind the protests. Law enforcement agencies are under pressure as they struggle to maintain order amidst these demonstrations.

The situation has also affected communication services; disruptions to WhatsApp and other internet services have been reported in multiple areas, a recurring issue during PTI protests. Authorities have justified these measures as necessary to ensure public safety and maintain law and order.

As tensions continue to simmer in Punjab, both the government and law enforcement agencies are on high alert, preparing for further unrest amid ongoing political challenges.
